The Beginning of Modern Mexican History
Although many civilizations such as the Aztec and Mayan were flourishing in Mexico before the Spanish arrived, their rich culture might not have been propelled as it was without the challenges of the invaders.
Day 1 – After a coffee break in San Fernando we continue to Tampico, crossing the Trop of Cancer into a world of subtropical plants. We arrive in Tampico, the New Orleans of Mexico, early in the evening.
Day 2 – Next morning we depart Tampico for Veracruz. We enjoy the scenery of a lush tropical area of banana plantations along the Gulf of Mexico, alternating with mango trees, pineapple plantations, and thatched roof houses. In Veracruz we enjoy the pleasures of sun and sea, fine seafood delights, and tropical music.
Day 3 – A visit to the Fortress of San Juan de Ulau is next. Antigua, a small village on the river where Cortes burned his ships, has all the charm that greeted the Spaniards in 1519.
Day 4 – Our sight-seeing includes Boca del Rio (Mouth of the River). Stroll down Malecon on the waterfront, and spend time shopping and enjoying the night life on your own.
Day 5 – We depart Veracruz with our next stop at the ruins of El Tajin, with its famous Pyramid of the Niches. We enjoy an exciting performance of Los Volodores (The Flying Indians) in which they literally defy death. We depart for Papantla, where Totonac Indians still dress in their traditional white cotton garments. These people believe the Ancient City is still a sacred dwelling place of the gods. Papantla was once known as the vanilla capital of the world. Then it’s on to Tampico to spend another evening strolling the streets of the New Orleans of Mexico and enjoy dinner on your own.
Day 6 – After your final Mexican breakfast we pack up our souvenirs and our memories and head back north to the Rio Grande Valley via Victoria.
